Abstract:

Includes research correspondence, notes, and manuscript and typescript drafts for writings by Edith M. Coulter, including her 1927 thesis, "A guide to historical bibliographies", with an expanded version published by the University of California Press in 1935 as "Historical bibliographies, a systematic and annotated guide". Also includes "The development of librarianship in California", and works relating to Daniel Wadsworth Coit: "An artist in El Dorado", and the engraver, Henry Miller. With some biographical material and ephemera, including an uncut sheet of early bookplates from Sutro Library, San Francisco, Calif.

Edith M. Coulter graduated from Stanford University in 1905, attended the New York State Library School in 1906, and worked as a reference librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, then was assistant and later, associate professor in the School of Librarianship.
